General Description

The Behavioral Health/Human Services program seeks a dedicated practitioner who is interested in training the next generation of the human services workforce in Philadelphia. The program prepares students for their chosen career path, whether it be going directly into the workforce or transferring to a four-year institution. Faculty members are invited to teach across the curriculum as well as in specialty areas to include Addiction Recovery, Aging, Disabilities, Social Determinants of Behavioral Health, and Trauma. Most courses involve a practice component where students are introduced to hands-on experience that prepares them to work with clients in diverse human service settings and engage in practicum experiences. This role requires a deep commitment to supporting a whole person/student model of development, recognizing the diverse needs of our student body.

The ideal faculty candidate is an educator-practitioner who sees teaching as an extension of service, understands the unique challenges and strengths of community college students, and embodies a whole person model philosophy of student development. They are flexible, innovative, collaborative, and passionate about preparing the next generation of human service professionals.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Support community college students to further develop their Behavioral Health and Human Services knowledge and skills, professional attitudes and behaviors, for college and workplace success.
  • Teach a full-time course load in Behavioral Health/Human Services, including in-person, synchronous (real-time online) and asynchronous (online) courses .
  • Design, update, and assess curricula to reflect current professional standards, best practices, and community needs. Employ inclusive, evidence-based pedagogies to engage a diverse urban student population.
  • Commitment to the College’s Mission: Demonstrate a sense of connection and responsibility for helping the College to achieve success through a commitment to its mission, vision, and values.
  • External and Internal Community Relations: Actively participate in the academic life of the College; including participation in graduation, recruitment events, general assemblies, student life activities and other cross functional teams. Create learning opportunities for students inside and outside of the classroom including opportunities to teach dual-enrollment high school students.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively, share vision, focus on people, initiate positive change, value differences and foster collaboration. Work with and inspire others to achieve college, department, and individual success. Proactively identify/address problems.
  • Respect for Diversity: Establish an inclusive environment in the classroom. Demonstrate an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of the College’s faculty, staff and students.
  • Assessment: Full participation in the assessment of student learning and student learning outcomes at the course, program, and institution levels.
  • Student Success: Strive for excellence in teaching, applying best practices in discipline, and modeling behaviors that encourage student success and retention.
  • Utilize innovative teaching strategies and technologies for online learning and other technology tools to meet the learning needs of a diverse student population.
  • Maintain office hours to meet with students outside of the classroom and respond to questions or concerns.
  • Leadership and Development: Commitment to professional learning and growth, student mentoring, and service to the profession. Remain current in the use of technology, developments within the field of discipline, and developments related to teaching and student success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Human Services, and/or Public Health with a Behavioral Health specialization and/or emphasis, or closely related field required.
  • Ability to teach in practice areas related to individuals, groups, families and communities, required.
  • Demonstrated competence in clinical methods, assessment, ethics, and practice supervision.
  • At least 5 years of recent professional experience in behavioral health / human services (clinical or direct practice), including experience relevant to the courses to be taught.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to instruct courses in specialty areas such as Addiction Recovery, Aging, Disabilities, Social Determinants of Behavioral Health, and Trauma preferred.
  • Experience supervising student internships or clinical practicum.
  • Current license holder preferred (e.g. LSW, LCSW, LPC, LMFT) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching within a community college including online or hybrid formats.
  • Bilingual or other language proficiency.
