Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director, Counseling Assistance Program for Students (CAPS), the CAPS Counselor is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of college counseling services that promote student academic success, psychological wellness, and retention. The Counselor will provide direct counseling services to students on all three campuses (and Learning Centers if needed) as well as provide development and oversight of the CAPS internship program, ensuring that interns are trained on college policies, procedures, and SCC Student Development. The Counselor would organize group counseling sessions, form peer support groups, establish student and employee training and development programs, and assist in the development and implementation of a psychological wellness program for students. The Counselor would also serve as a campus confidential advisor for Title IX compliance and assist in the drug and alcohol prevention program. This is a full-time, regular position based at the Lincoln Campus, with travel to the Beatrice and Milford Campuses.

Essential Functions

  1. Provide direct counseling services to students and administer student counseling services.
  2. Supervise, manage, and evaluate the counseling interns
  3. Provide training, crisis intervention, and guidance to staff in professional coaching, student and personal wellbeing, and active listening techniques
  4. Interpret and use psychological reports and psychometric information related to cognitive or mental health concerns that may affect student success and suggest services or strategies to cope with or overcome such concerns or impediments.
  5. Provide recommendations to the Director and Deans regarding a student’s suitability for enrollment as part of the Student Code of Conduct adjudication process.
  6. Implement and oversee systems for assuring follow-up with students, especially when there is a threat of harm to self or others.
  7. Assists in monitoring a budget for the purpose of managing and planning the activities of specific projects and programs.
  8. Coordinate and plan ongoing outreach and promotion of counseling services, as well as annual mental health and wellness awareness activities at various SCC locations.
  9. Work collaboratively to plan and develop leadership, service learning, and training opportunities for students, including, but not limited to, alcohol and other drug awareness, relationship violence, bystander intervention, resiliency, mental and emotional well-being, and interpersonal relationship skills.
  10. Serve as a liaison and provide training for Faculty and Staff concerning community resources and services available to students.
  11. Serve as needed on the college’s CARE (College Access to Resources for Excellence). The CARE team is SCC’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to address students who are disruptive or potentially dangerous to themselves or others.
  12. Maintain confidentiality of student information, records, and documentation files.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage, or Family Therapy.
  2. Licensure as an Independent Mental Health Practitioner in the state of Nebraska at the time of hire.
  3. Two (2) years of full-time professional work experience providing counseling/mental health/clinical services.
